the carebags® story:
20 years ago, 2 young mothers living in Mission, B.C. began producing a line of stretchy mesh reusable produce bags. Created as an alternative to the wastefulness of disposable plastic bags, Carebags became an instant favorite of the eco-conscious consumers.
Flash forward to 2011 and we find those original bags are still in use. Designed to last for life, Carebags are “the original” reusable veggie bag.
The first Carebags sales rep was the inventor’s best friend, Diana Conway. A dedicated recycler. In 2008, Conway left a 25 year movie to take over Carebags.
What makes these bags special? It’s not only longevity of the textile, it’s unique stretch, washability, and hundreds of uses. Nor is it simply that you can buy/wash & store produce and bulk right in the bag. Foodies send us amazing notes on straining, sieving, sprouting & stuffing. Travelers list dozens of handy tricks from brewing coffee, to packing clothes, stashing laundry & separating foreign currencies. Mom’s too love our bags for kids lunches, and toys. While fitness professionals have told us they use Carebags to keep sneakers & sweats separate, in gym totes. Still our favorite defining virtue is that Carebags are locally made within a tiny eco footprint, in Canada.
Conway believes that local production fosters sustainable economic growth, builds community, and provides accountability. As she puts it “the business is based on human relationships.” Our top-notch staff of dedicated textile professionals, in Vancouver, B.C., provides proof positive that small production models are a viable solution. Good employees are the gold of our venture. Several small companies share our little factory. Not only do the companies work together to maintain a constant flow of projects, but on such fundamentals as atmosphere, bonuses, and holidays. It is a factory of the future.
Carebags maintains a real connection with customers, collecting stories, providing feedback and links to other interesting ventures. We contribute to local non-profit events & community eco education.
3 years ago Carebags created their own competition with Got it! reusables, an economy model. The competition between the two Canadian products has been neck and neck ever since. Carebags are tested to 20 years, Got it! to 3 years.
“We’ve seen many a challenge” says Conway. We've had grocery chains leave us for cheaper imports, only to return the next year. We've seen competitors copy everything from our design and colour to the text on our website. Still "Carebags" remain as the original quality reusable bag.
The list of this bag's functions is endless. Far beyond the traditions of old school food care, the bags replace plastic for everything from transporting toiletries through airport security, scrubbing pots / pans and surfboards, drying herbs for storage, protecting shoes, laundering delicates & polishing silver.
